On the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day, at least one Loyalist College student believes that equality between men and women still isn’t there.

Heather Doyle, an Art and Design Foundation student, believes men aren’t treated equally in the media.

“You see a lot of commercials where men are treated as being really stupid or always doing something that’s wrong and because of that guys are given a lot of flack,” said Doyle.

However, when it comes to rights, she believes that both men and women are treated equally.

It has been less than 100 years since the first woman was elected into Parliament and less than 100 years since women were first able to vote federally.

Each year on this day thousands of events are held around the world to celebrate the day. In more than 25 counties it is an official holiday, much like Mother’s Day.

Men began voting in Canada in 1791, and were the only gender allowed to have a job as a politician. Medicine and law were also job held by only men. It was generally accepted by most women and men that those jobs were for men.

Although Canada has made a lot of progress over the years, students at Loyalist College still have different views on what a feminist is.

Sports Journalism student Benjamin Aube says it’s a broad question.

“It sometimes has negative connotations these days, but it’s someone who believes in equal rights,” Aube said.

Doyle said that feminism has lately been pushed too far by extremists.

“Those fighting have made it so women are forced to go into high-end jobs, and don’t have the option to be a stay at home mom anymore,” said Doyle.

Some major milestones between the time women were able to vote and now include pay equality in 1952, the creation of the cabinet portfolio of Minister Responsible for the Status of Women in 1971 and The Right Honourable Jeanne Sauve became the first woman to hold office as the Governor General in 1984.

Over the years as the role of women has changed in society, the day has changed its tone. It has gone from being a reminder about the negatives to celebrating the positives.

I learned how to use the second year cameras today. It was a lot like the cameras we used in first year, but slightly more complex. It was a crash course in learning how to use it too, because as soon as that class was done, my classmate and I went off to shoot our assignment.

The assignment we shot went really well. We have a lot of good clips and some really good interviews. Our challenge of the day was figuring out how to get good audio, since we shot in a loud and crowded area.

I began writing the script for it today which was challenging, because it’s my first time doing one. I also made some phone calls to try to get information about the event, like how many years it’s been held and such, but nobody I talked to could answer me, which was frustrating. I’m looking forward to putting the clips together though and achieving the final product. I still have to figure out the angel I want to take on it but I do have a couple of ideas in mind.

For the rest of this week during Newsroom, I’m working in the TV anchoring section. I haven’t worked with TV since the end of February so it’s tough getting back into the way things work. Day One has been slightly slow, since there isn’t much to work on yet. Tomorrow though, my classmate and I get a quick crash course on how the second year video cameras work, and then we’re being sent off to shoot an assignment.

Our assignment is to shoot the Loyalist College Open House, where high school students come in and look at program options. They’ll have the chance to meet students and talk with faculty, see displays highlighting programs the college offers, go on a tour of campus and the residence as well as a few other items on the agenda.

My classmate will be doing the filming and I will be talking to Loyalist students, faculty and the touring students. Today we spent a half hour or so going through the type of shots we need with one of our teachers and there’s a lot of work that’s going to be put into this shoot.

Mayor Neil Ellis is running for a second term and spoke Tuesday night at the mayoral debate at Loyalist College. Ellis, 48, has been mayor for four years, which was his first political experience. He spent three years at Carleton University studying law and psychology. He has lived in Belleville his entire life. He was involved heavily with the community before he began his term as mayor. Ellis was on the minor hockey board, director of Quinte Ballet School, was one of the founding directors of Buy Locally Owned Group, sat on the Revenue Canada Agency Board, and was a community Harry J Clarke parent teacher volunteer. He purchased a family business, which was a bike store. He still owns the store, which he’s owned 27 years. Ellis feels that infrastructure is a major platform for Belleville. He would like to improve the fire station, saying it does not adequately serve the systems of Belleville. There is a plan for a new fire station, and the police station has been on the business plan too. Ellis feels like they will be able to get both buildings and build a strong community, with little effect on taxpayers.

Honesty is the best policy when it comes to dealing with lottery tickets, says local retailer Raj Shah. The $12.5-million ticket fraud doesn’t just affect the people involved, but has the ability to damage businesses across Ontario, he said.

“This is not a good thing,” said Shah, a convenience store owner. “It’s such a big business for lottery and people have a lot of trust because the OLG is a common organization.”

On Wednesday it was revealed that three family members allegedly stole the hefty lottery ticket- and cashed in. A luxury home, a mansion and three big-named cars were on the list of their purchases.

OPP say that the store manager and his father didn’t let the ticket holder know they had won the jackpot for December 26, 2003. Two months after that, manager’s sister claimed the prize, supposedly saying she wasn’t in contact with her family. Since 2001, this is the seventh lottery scandal incident in Ontario.

“I’m a very customer oriented person so my first priority is the customer, if they feel bad, I feel bad,” said Shah.

Even though the incident took place in 2003, it was recently brought to light because of a new computer tracking system. The system, a computer tool called Data Analysis and Retrieval Technology (DART). Because of the program, officials now know a small number of things about the true buyer of the ticket, like where it was purchased, favoured locations, and regularity of play. They are also keeping some facts about the ticket hushed so the true owner can be identified.

Over Thanksgiving weekend, Central Hastings OPP will be participating in Operation Impact. Operation Impact is a nation-wide campaign to make Canadian roads the safest in the world. It’s being held from October 8-11. More people are traveling and traffic crashes happen more frequently on holiday weekends.

“Any holiday attracts more travelers,” said Alana Deubel, provincial constable for Central Hastings OPP. “It’s a good time for people to be aware and for programs like this to take place when there’s an increased traffic flow and there’s more people using the roadways.”

Operation Impact is sponsored by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP) and Transport Canada and is part of Road Safety Vision 2010. In 2007 there were more than 600 deaths in Ontario because of traffic accidents. 2007 data is the latest available statistic with information on traffic fatalities.

“We’re focusing on impaired driving, we often conduct ride programs. That’s a regular part of our duties but also there’s speed enforcement, so radar as well as the laser LIDAR and sometimes we look for seatbelts use and compliance with the RIDE program,” said Deubel.

The RIDE program is run year long by the police who conduct spot checks. Vehicles are stopped and drivers are checked for impairment. The latest RIDE check put on by the Central Hastings OPP yielded two charges.

“There is traffic enforcement directed patrol. We’re focusing on driving behaviors that put other drivers and passengers and people on the road at risk,” said Deubel.

This time last year the H1N1 virus was all anyone talked about, but this year almost nothing has been heard.

“Last year was a different flu season because the H1N1 flu emerged very late in the planning stages for vaccinations for the flu. This season is going back to what has been the norm,” said Carol Snell, Media Relations for Hastings Prince Edward County health unit.

Out of six Loyalist College students interviewed, not very many are worried about H1N1 and getting sick.

“I am a little bit, just because it was so big last year. But since we haven’t heard anything I don’t really know,” said Cally Post, a first year culinary student.

Are we letting our guard down one year later? With the topic basically unheard of in the media recently, one may think so. There have been no reports of people being ill and no information on what this flu season is going to entail.

“More details will be known on October 6 when the Board of Health meeting is being held,” said Snell.

“I’m hoping not, it’s very much there. Coughing and colds are how it’s spread and we have to be diligent in taking care of our own health,” said Lauren Deans, Loyalist College Nurse.

To prevent yourself from getting the flu and spreading germs, it’s vital to wash your hands frequently, stay home if you’re sick and cover your mouth when you cough. In the middle of October, flu shots will be made available to the public. H1N1 is part of this year’s vaccine; it has gone from being a pandemic flu to a seasonal flu. This is the 11th year that the province has offered flu shots to Ontario residents.

“We’re looking at probably a fairly mild flu season this year,” said Snell, “that’s the best prediction that we’re hearing based on the evidence from the Southern Hemisphere, which is ahead of us on every flu season and we look to the Southern Hemisphere to see what the flu activity is there to predict what it probably will be in our hemisphere for the coming flu season.”

Loyalist College students will be getting the chance to partner up with small and medium sized businesses to make themselves more employable.

“These projects are going to allow us to work with small and medium enterprises to help them commercialize,” said Maureen Piercy, Loyalist College President. “These funds will allow us to support some very interesting projects going forward.”

One project will have students working with a company called N2 Towers Inc. The company has developed an inert gas generator fire suppression system. It’s a project that will essentially help businesses and the military deal with suppressing fires.

The College will be receiving $155, 000 of funding that allows the school to work closely with small and medium sized businesses, MP Daryl Kramp announced Tuesday.

“It should help them prepare for more employment, but of course we have to create more employment,” said Kramp. “So this will create more employment in the private and public sector and if it’s suitable for the students to participate based on their field of study with that, then good for them and if not then they’ll obviously be exploring options and other interests.”

The funding for Loyalist is part of the $15-million Applied Research and Commercialization Initiative. It is part of FedDev Ontario, which is part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. FedDev Ontario is a pilot initiative put forth to help small and medium sized businesses bridge the gap between research and commercialization.

“It’s for the college to use effectively to advance the cause of the incubation commercialization private sector working along in collaboration with the college staff and the college goals,” said Daryl Kramp.
